LN106 hard starting: ideas?

'94 LN106 with 150k km, previously started first crank every time, today and yesterday I've had to turn it over for a few seconds before it'll fire up. Glow plug relay is clicking on and off, glow plug rail getting power (test light). Doesn't cough and splutter for the first couple of seconds of cranking. I think it's a fuel issue but there aren't any visible leaks from any lines/filter/pump. Diesel filter was clean. Runs and idles fine once going. Ideas?

Local mechanics didn't bolt the diesel filter/primer pump back onto the studs when they reinstalled it after swapping a brake line the other day and I only noticed today so it's been rattling around loose on the studs, but I don't really see how that could be a problem (never trust the professionals).

clean out the intercooler. i soaked mine with turps then supercheap degreasing spray. let it properly dry.
solved a similar issue on our triton

No intercooler. Naturally aspirated 3L.

Are your batteries in good nick and you are sure the engine is being spun fast enough?

No leaks around the filter or priming pump letting air into the system?After your last experiance with the local mechanics I would be be concentrating on this area.

maybe they took the priming pump off and lost the copper washer?

Just because you have power on the rack,does not mean one or more glow plugs are not getting sad.Take them out and check.

IF non of that works just sell it to me please.

It was all good till it got "messed-with"..I would definitely start "there". Did they disconnect any fuel-lines when they unbolted the filter/primer ? They can "pull air", without leaking. Rigid fuel-lines can hair-line-crack, right in behind the threaded-collar, from the kind of vibration that "left-hanging" would have produced..and another possibility is the hand-pump-seal is compromised.(the pump itself,not the can-seal) They can fail out of the blue. I would take it back and make them remedy it, pointing out their crap work

Wow that could be the last ln106 in the entire country with only 150 clicks on it, barely run in.

start with the simple stuff first before starting it in the morning pump the fuel primer till it goes hard and see if that does it if still the same take the glow plugs out and test them on a battery one at a time

Lol yeah low kms 106:D , anyway if it’s cranking ok you have air supply to check,glow plugs to check ( take out and check)
Also glow time should be at least 10 secs if not there’s a few things to check
Then you have fuel supply, main issue with that age is primer seals leaking allowing fuel to flow back to tank (which I believe you had on cruiser)

Will take plugs out and test, and try priming til hard before starting.

It starts fine first crank once it's been run so it's either an air leak in the fuel system somewhere or glow.

It's off a dry stock stud farm in the Wairarapa and k's are legit as far as I can tell from service records etc, mostly everything was mint (til my local mechanic touched it).

I'd start with the fuel filter/primer as Norsk stated, ensure the filter is still on firmly and that the seal isn't leaking (may have vibrated loose from hanging free for a few days), check the hose clamps on fuel filter are snug check hoses to and from filter for wet spots indicating a hole/leak.
pump until firm then try starting. If no go then try again but glow twice before starting (if this works it indicates the glow plugs are not working correctly and it may be time to replace them, also check the metal rail that connects the glow plugs is bolted onto the glows firmly.
Does it puff out any smoke as you crank it? this may indicate unburnt fuel.

No smoke, tried glowing twice with no difference. Strongly suspect air leak in fuel but was a bit lost for where to track it down.

Fuel primer leak on them and suck air - pretty sure they can be by passed easy as to check the problem, glow plugs need to be pulled and checked

Bleed your injectors . With the engine running crack the feed line at the injecter which will spurt a little then retighten.

The valve in the primer pump craps out and fuel drains off over night back to the tank just do the simple stuff first rotary injector pumps are self bleeding

Whats a LN106? I thought rifle of some sort when I first read the title....

Toyota hilux diesel probably got a 3l in it

I pumped the primer til hard this morning and it fired first crank. Air leak confirmed now just have to find where.

I have a spare newprimer pump lying around (parts bin Toyotas!) will test if fitting it fixes the issue

I had very similar problem last week on my KUN26R Hilux. Would start after some cranking (unusual, normally started first turn), then run for for a while, then stop. Hadn't been driven for two months. Would prime the pump, crank it some more, then it would drive fine. Once it had stopped for 30 mins, problem would return.

Thought back to what I'd done on the last service, had changed both the fuel filters, the pre-filter and the factory filter. Discovered I had dropped the o-ring out of the top of the water trap that screws onto the bottom of the pre-filter, found it on top of the chassis rail. Could hear the filter making little 'sip' noises as it depressurized.

Understand that you are not happy with your local mechanic, but if I were you I would be straight back there demanding he show you exactly what he dismantled. If he has had the pump off its mount, is there any chance he had the fuel circuit apart to get at the brake line? As mentioned above it is possible there is a hairline crack somewhere due to vibration, or it could be like my problem, a simple missing o-ring or seal.

Just replace the hose to the filter as that’s the most likely hose that’s split.

I don't want to get ahead of myself but I changed the primer pump and it started well an hour later, when earlier today it was running like absolute shit and wouldn't idle, so I may have fixed the problem.


Any tips on changing the rear gearbox mount now?

Did not succeed. Getting Brad to look at it.

Why did you have to ask this.........went to shift mine, and turned over but didn't start. Finally caught enough fuel to fire, coughed abit, and away it went.

Brand new. Obviously still sucking air or has a moving blockage somewhere in the fuel system but I can't track it down and it died in the middle of the street yesterday and I'm sick of looking and getting covered in diesel

Have you considered trading it in on a Landcruiser?

i can safely say that in the last few weeks i have learned a hell of allot of info on the mitsi 4d56 motor !!!

Can't find a low k's rust free landcruiser for less than 30 grand so not really

Gimp had my work sxs go in for its service, end off the week it come back on the frieght truck $150. Any how i usually have a quick look over to see whats been done any new bushes etc etc. Thought thats strange they havn't replaced the oil filter, check oil hmm old oil. Ring them up, yep no problems just new oils and a grease. I said new filter , yep new filter on the job sheet . I had to explain to them i didn't even think they had in there work shop, sure enough had to take it back in to town for it to be serviced.
Now if i hadn't off checked we would have been send a account for a service that hadn't even been done

So when it stopped how did you start it did it need priming up again

Primed, cranked til battery flat (not long as it hadn't run far since last flat...) jump started, died again straight away, towed home behind landcruiser

When it died did it just stop or cough and splatter then die?
No signs of diesel bug in tank or on filter? Maybe check intank filter/screen

cough and splutter. could be in-tank screen blocking up with stuff.

Check the fuel line Where it comes down the chassis rail , been having a few lately rust out between tank and chassis rail

Low ks , rust free , landcruiser . Pick one and that’s what you will get if you’re lucky

hard without seeing it ... has it got the proper fuel filter on it try and start it and see if it runs better if you keep pumping the primer

Try sticking the fuel pick up line (feed line for filter/primer) into a diesel container, to bypass the tank. Pump the primer up hard and try, might need bleeding or try some start ya bastard to get it under way.
Tank screen might be blocked or tank breather might be blocked..?
Or as mentioned a leaky line
